The Help

In The help they are taking up the slavery issue in the 1960’s. It is a story about a girl, Miss Skeeter, who grew up in a family in Jackson where they had a made. She had a close relationship with her made when she was young. But her made is dead. Miss Skeeter wants to write about slavery, and she does. She is interviewing the maids, at first only two maids want to help her, but more maids join after a while. And she publishes a book too, with all their stories. Not all the women who have maids is so happy about the book, because there are a lot of personal stories in the book.

It’s probably a reason why we say for example that British people drink a lot of tea, because a lot of them do. But that does not mean all of them do. It says you are not supposed to judge a book by its cover, so we should not do that with people from different countries either. Because some of the national stereotyping can be offensive, like all Americans are fat and eat at McDonalds every day....       

Gandhi, scene 28

On January 30. 1948 Gandhi was assassinated by Nathuram Godse. Gandhi was on his way to morning prayers when Godse approached in front of him, but one of the girls who walked with Gandhi told him “Brother, Bapu is already late”. Then Godse shot him three times in the chest. Godse assassinated Gandhi because, Gandhi tried to make peace between the Muslims and Hindus, and Godse did not want that. Godse was a Hindu and wanted the Hindus to rule India.    

The Great Barrier Reef

There have been 1600 known shipwrecks at “The Great Barrier Reef”!

The ships are damage to the corals on the reef, and the oil from the ship can be hard to get rid of.  But it is safer for the ships to sail over the reef than outside in the open sea. That is because if there is something wrong with the ship it is easier to fix it if the ships are on the reef.

And there are a lot of tourists from all over the world who visits the reef. They liter a lot, and that could be dangerous for the corals and the wild life in the sea.

I don’t know if they are doing anything to stop this, but the ships could choose another route, and they could put up trash cans. 

Pirates in Africa

On BBC it was a story about piracy in Africa; there have been 19 attacks this year. That’s a lot, the local think it is because of the economics, and they can operate freely. But in November the U.S is sending a ship to help them.
